meet our school
Part of our project goal was creating a way to represent the connection between the school we were partnered with: Hope College Career and Readiness Academy, and the program; Kids at Hope, which was implemented during the time we worked on this project. I came up with the idea to produce a video that the school could use to broadcast who they are and what they are about. I filmed on campus during our many visits. I also got some of the students to wear a go pro around so the viewer could see their first hand perspective. I wrote ta script after learning a lot about both the kids, their, school and the Kids at Hope program. Below is the first video I edited and produced.
pre - design
In the beginning weeks of the project, one of the first exercises was asking ourselves the question we were going to be asking the students... What does Hope mean to you?
We each created a collage to represent our thoughts. My collage symbolizes how I feel hope when I see intriguing architectural creations - knowing that there were human beings who conceptualized and built them - hopeful that one day it is possible that I too could bring such a large scale thing to life. The buildings are emerged with nature because when I see greenery and vegetation, it makes me feel happy and hopeful about life itself- seeing things grow and breath.
Perceptions of Hope Project
Another exercise we went though in the beginning stages of the project, was creating a brief video that gives an idea of our target. What are initial ideas are, what we define as a "child at risk". This video represents our first initial understanding of the project and what we hope to achieve.

We wanted to connect with the students as much as possible. We scheduled 2 days on campus to spend some time in all 8 of the occupied classrooms. We split up and each spent 45 minutes going through activities. To get as much involvement out of the students we choose activities where they could choose to participate or choose not to participate if they were not comfortable with us enough. Thankfully a vast majority of the students were will to partake in these exercises with enthusiasm. Our main goal from this data collection was to find the identity the students wanted for their campus, their motivations, and their individual goals as well.
The next step was to take this data and conceptulize how we could turn it into a built form. The question was how to represent their collective meaning of Hope into an object that could be placed on their campus. How do we symbolize their meanings of Hope? What do we create it? What do we build?
the bench
Our final design is a bench - the start of an identity. A built form that is symbolic and easily duplicated. We consturcted two benches on campus, and with that we also added intuitive wayfinding and signage to bring color and pride for the school. As we thought through the process of creating this bench it led us create a day where we could bring the community together and make an event of building this bench and

And what a great way to end my final year and final studio presentation at Arizona State University.
