Project Name. The Pavilion

Project Studio. Interdisciplinary Design - Spring 2015

Project Location. Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona

Programs used. Photoshop, Model Building

Objective. To visit Papago Park, generate a concept principal to re-design the landscape, design a main pavilion space on the land, and design the interior space of the Pavilion

papago park

After first visiting the park, taking some imagery [as you can see below], we were to create an initial collage to represent a first idea of how this space could transform. You can see my iteration above, drawing water from the existing ponds, and bringing in new circulation and places to rest and relax.

landscape architecture

I based my concept on a radiant axis. With sharp lines in the landscape, they would be transformed into the circulation for the users to follow

You can see my transition from original concept sketch to a build 3D model, representing the terrain and elevations of the site.

This bigger building right here would be the location of the Pavilion.

I incorporated the same theme of sharp edges throughout my space. The purple line relates to my principal design and creates the space within the building. This purple line was developed from the sharp lines in my final landscape model. I did a study to understand how shade and shadows would be production from the orientation of my site. This study showed me that not much shade would be produced on the habitable side of my building, therefore it was an importing thing I needed to create.

This is a final model I constructed, showing my Pavilion design. The programming for this space needed to incorporate restrooms and an open space for observation.

interior design

We were instructed to choose an activity that represents a possibility within the space. I chose chasing a butterfly. I shot this panorama expressing the actions of this activity.

I translated it to plan on how one would move, and how it could be incorporated inot my original concept.

Working with just the entryway of the Pavilion, I translated my activity concept into the space.

The created a connection from the floor to ceiling. The first link on the left represents how when one first sees a butterfly, right in front of them, practically able to touch it. The second link is as the butterfly starts to fly away, further away from the original position. The third link represents how the bitterly is now high in the sky, and one can only look up and gaze. This translated into t viewing portal of the sky.
