Objective. to break down the interior space and understand the volumes, proportions, forms and language fo the space.

The former 15th century Kruisheren monastery and adjoining Gothic church has been transformed into a 60 room hotel. The interior pays tribute to contemporary design while also honoring age-old construction.

circulation vs. mass

Without any access to existing plans. Looking at photos, I was able to create a 2D plan taking cues from the masses within the space, and the symmetry of the Nave and church layout.

proportions

The contrast of the ancient structure with modern furnishings creates a unique experience and vantage points in the large open public spaces, as well as the intimate guest rooms, showcasing original features.

scale

The repetition of the the gothic architectural structure agasint the added contemporary  structures creates new environments and new levels of engagment within the space.
